What to Expect During an Acupuncture Treatment? What happens during a session? or most importantly... does it hurt?

If you’re considering acupuncture for pain relief, stress management, infertility or holistic health, understanding the step-by-step treatment process can ease concerns and enhance your comfort. This guide will walk you through each stage of an acupuncture appointment, from the initial consultation to post-treatment care, so you know exactly what to expect.

Initial Consultation: Understanding Your Unique Needs

Before the treatment begins, your acupuncturist will conduct a comprehensive consultation. This step is crucial for designing a treatment plan tailored to your health concerns.

What does the consultation include?

  • Present disease - Here the practitioner will discuss your main complaint and pertinent details relating to this complaint. We often will also ask questions around your over all health such as appetite, stool or sleeping problems. You can also provide any examinations or tests to the practitioner at this stage.

  • Diagnostic techniques – In TCM, practitioners analyse pulse, tongue appearance, and perform western medical examinations to assist with their diagnosis and the evaluation of your condition.

  • Treatment goals – Whether you seek relief for chronic pain, digestion issues, stress, or hormonal imbalance, the acupuncturist will align treatment with your health objectives.

Once the consultation is complete, you’ll move to the treatment room for your first session.


The Acupuncture Treatment Process: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Needle Insertion

Many first-time patients worry about the needles—but acupuncture needles are nothing like injections!

  • They are ultra-thin, sterile, and flexible, designed for minimal discomfort. The needles are sterile and one time use only needles.

  • Most sessions require less than 10 needles, placed strategically along your body to promote healing and encourage the body to return back to balance.

  • The needles are inserted one at a time, the practitioner will first locate the point, disinfect the region and then insert the needle.

  • Patients describe feeling many different sensations ranging from a mild tingling, to pressure or moving sensations. These sensation are perfectly normal and are needed as part of the therapeutic process.

Step 2: Needle Retention – Activating Healing

Once inserted, the needles remain in place for about 30 minutes.

  • During this time, you may feel continue to feel the same sensations of a mild tingling, to pressure or moving. Or these sensations may gently fade away.

  • Depending on the condition the practitioner may gently stimulate the needles to enhance the effects or place a machine on the needles with provide continuous stimulation.

  • During this stage patient often also report starting to feel deeply relaxed.

Step 3: Needle Removal – Completing the Session

  • After the 30 minutes the needles are removed.

  • This is quick and painless, leaving no lasting marks.

  • You may feel an immediate sense of relief from your condition or the relief may come in the next few days. The practitioner will guide you based on the condition and its response to treatment.

Each session is designed to recalibrate your body, promoting long-term healing over multiple treatments. The goal is to provide lasting relief by encourage the body to heal the problem. This way you may experience relief from your symptoms even once the treatments have stopped.

Post-Treatment: What Happens After Acupuncture?

After your acupuncture session, you may experience:

Deep relaxation – A natural, calm feeling from the restored energy flow.

Symptom relief – Some patients feel instant improvement, while others notice gradual benefits over a few sessions.

Temporary side effects – Slight bruising or tenderness at the needle sites may occur but will fade quickly.

The practitioner may also give dietary, exercise of lifestyle advice at this point to assist in your recovery and prevent the reoccurrence of the condition.

How to Maximize Your Results

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, stressfull events or excessive work immediately after treatment and for the rest of the day.

  • You can then carry on with your life as usual the next day unless the practitioner has given you specific advice regarding things to avoid.

  • Follow any dietary or lifestyle recommendations given by your acupuncturist.

Follow-Up Sessions: How Many Do You Need?

The frequency of treatments depends on your condition and goals.

  • For chronic conditions, multiple sessions (3-7) are recommended over several weeks.

  • For general wellness or stress relief, monthly or bimonthly acupuncture may help maintain balance.

  • For acute pain, patients often experience relief after 1-3 treatments done over 1-2 weeks.

Your acupuncturist will guide you based on your body’s response, and the condition.
